New DDoS Mitigation Service Launched Following Member Demand

The London Internet Exchange have shared that they have activated a basic distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) mitigation solution across all of their peering LANs.

With global DDoS attacks reporting a 29% increase in Q1 of 2024 compared to 2023, it is integral that networks have a security strategy and DDoS solution in place.

LINX Protect is a remotely triggered black hole (RTBH) service that allows LINX member networks to block potentially harmful traffic and protect their network infrastructure. The service is available for those networks peering with any of the LINX route servers to effectively divert the flow of any DDoS traffic that is part of an attack to a specific IP next-hop where this affected traffic will be discarded.

Mike Hellers, Product Development Manager for LINX commented;

“Some of the LINX members had been asking us about launching a DDoS service for a while now. When our community makes suggestions or provides feedback, we like to do the best to scope the ideas and either provide them with a solution ourselves or advice on next steps.”

LINX Protect was made available earlier this year at LINX in London and was born following demand from the member community within the enterprise and financial sector in particular. Now available at all LINX interconnection points, it helps to maintain a high level of service for member networks, and an important factor for the LINX team to provide this next level security solution.

Hellers continues;

“We are offering this service as a free value add to the LINX membership. By directing the affected traffic to a specific IP next-hop this ensures that no traffic will reach the original destination which means peering, connectivity and other infrastructure in the members AS can remain unaffected and any DDoS traffic is dropped closer to the source.”

It is thought that LINX will be introducing an advanced and more comprehensive DDoS solution in due course, once again specifically for networks that utilise the IXP for multiple services from colocation to peering.
