LINX Kick Off Celebrations of 30 Years of Shaping the Internet at Capacity Europe 2024

This week, the London Internet Exchange (LINX) will begin a series of events to mark a major milestone – 30 years of pioneering the UK’s digital infrastructure.

Founded in 1994, LINX has become one of the world’s largest and most influential Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), playing a crucial role in shaping the modern internet in the UK.

The celebration at Capacity Europe brings together key partners including Telehouse who are also marking their own milestone this year with their 35th anniversary. Telehouse have been integral to LINX’s success since the very beginning back in 1994 and the collaboration over the past three decades has not only fostered growth for both organisations but has also been a driving force behind the evolution of the internet in the UK and beyond.

Transforming the Internet Landscape

LINX’s inception in London was driven by the need to improve local internet traffic routing, making it faster and more efficient. As an IXP, LINX provides a neutral meeting point where networks can exchange data traffic, improving speed, reducing latency, and enhancing the overall internet experience. This capability has become critical for supporting the online activities we now take for granted—whether it’s streaming high-definition content, running real-time applications, or accessing cloud services.

Over the last 30 years, LINX has grown exponentially, connecting hundreds of networks from around the world and facilitating the digital transformation that underpins the modern economy. IXPs like LINX have fundamentally altered the way data moves across the internet, eliminating bottlenecks and ensuring seamless connectivity for users and businesses alike. This innovation has helped the rise of content delivery networks, high-speed streaming platforms, and data-heavy applications that form the backbone of today’s digital world

Looking Ahead: The Future of Connectivity

As LINX and partners like Telehouse reflect on 30+ years of success, they also look ahead to the future of interconnection in an increasingly digital and automated world. The internet of tomorrow is expected to see enormous growth in network capacity, fuelled by advances in cloud services, 5G, and edge computing. With AI and automation becoming mainstream, demand for increased capacity and a faster, smarter, and more resilient network will only intensify.

At the Capacity Europe event, LINX and its partners will discuss the critical role IXPs will continue to play in meeting these demands. Future innovations will focus on scaling capacity and creating smarter interconnection strategies to handle the explosive growth of data-driven applications and AI systems. The continued development of automation and AI presents opportunities for IXPs like LINX to optimise and enhance network performance while addressing the challenges of increased complexity and bandwidth consumption.

Celebrating at Capacity Europe

Capacity Europe, one of the largest global events for the connectivity industry, offers the perfect stage to launch LINX’s celebrations alongside key partners and many of the 950+ member networks.

The event will not only celebrate LINX’s 30-year journey but also spotlight the future of global connectivity. Together, LINX and its partners will explore how their combined expertise can address the growing digital demands of the future, ensuring the internet remains open, reliable, and scalable for generations to come.

As LINX enters its next chapter, the organization continues to be a driving force in global internet infrastructure, pushing the boundaries of interconnection, network capacity, and digital innovation.

Pioneering Interconnectivity for 30 Years…. And Counting!

Capacity Europe 2024 will be held in London from October 15th-17th, visit the LINX team at stand 719 to find out more about their interconnection services in the UK and beyond.
