IX-API Version 2.5 Introduced with a Range of Enhanced Interconnection Options

IX-API provides an interface for provisioning key services at multiple Internet Exchanges (IXs). It supports fully end-to-end automated processes and enables networks to configure, change and cancel services.

Since its introduction the IX-API development team, AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX, have continued to develop the tool by adding and upgrading the features available for its growing number of users.

In our previous update we covered the new statistics and analytics interface and how the feature gives users of the API insight on the amount of traffic that is exchanged via their connection. On top of that, users were able to assess the performance and efficiency of their connection, which in turn helps with capacity planning and routing design.

This update provides more in-depth information about the changes to the IX-API since then. The goal has been to enhance the overall system by focusing on key features, without introducing unnecessary complexity.

The upgrade from the previous version 2.1 to 2.5 adds the following features for IX-API users:

  • Port access and port groups (connections) management.
  • Capability of querying basic statistical data from port accesses and logical services. Both as aggregates and time series.
  • Improvements on connections filtering.
  • A new product offering property: service_provider_pop_name which shows which PoP the user will need to reach to consume the service, for instance, Cloud Connect service.

Next Steps

As with all technical systems it is an ongoing process. The key is to quickly identify where the main benefits can be achieved and to find the best and most efficient ways to implement them.

LINX Chief Technical Officer, Richard Petrie, said: ”We will continue to consult with networks and with our IXP partners throughout the development process. The key changes will be communicated so that all stakeholders are fully up to speed.”
